Good hashtag research is mostly about checking what people already use for your topic. You do not need paid tools to start. These steps use the platforms' own search and a little patience.

Start with the platform search

Type your topic into the search bar of the platform and open the Tags tab. Autocomplete suggests related tags and often shows how many posts use each. Note the ones that fit your post. Do this on the platform you will post to, because tag use differs between them.

Look at similar accounts

Find a few accounts with similar content and see which tags they use. Do not copy their whole set. Instead, note tags that describe your content too, and check whether those tags lead to posts like yours.

Check each tag before you use it

Open the tag page and look at the recent posts. If they match your post, the tag is fine. If they show unrelated or inappropriate content, skip it. Also watch for tags that platforms have restricted, because using them can reduce a post's visibility.

Use curated lists as a starting point

Lists like the topic pages on this site save time by grouping tags that belong together. Treat them as ideas to test, not guarantees. Remove tags that do not fit and add your own place or niche tags.

Keep a tag notebook

Save the tags you have verified in a note, grouped by content theme. Update it every few weeks. Over time you will have a library you can pick five or ten from in seconds, instead of researching from scratch for each post.

A practical research routine

Research can start inside the platform itself: search the topic, inspect the related terms and look at recent content to see how a tag is actually being used. Then compare those observations with your own post. A tag may be popular but wrong for the subject, while a smaller community term may be exactly right. Record candidates by topic, location and format so the final choice stays manageable. For current platform rules, prefer the platform's own documentation over old blog posts or screenshots that may no longer describe the interface.
