Festival content is seasonal and often highly visual. The useful hashtag set is the one that explains what the post actually contains: the festival, the activity, the place, the food, the outfit or the type of celebration.

Start with the festival

Use the main festival label when the post is genuinely about that celebration. Then decide whether a regional name or local tradition is important to the post.

Add the visible activity

A Diwali rangoli, Pongal kolam, Christmas market, Holi colour photo or Navratri Garba video has a more specific subject than the festival name alone. Use a tag for that activity when it accurately describes the post.

Use location carefully

Location tags can be useful for local events and travel-related festival content. Use the actual city, venue or region shown rather than adding a famous location that is not part of the post.

Keep the set small

Instagram currently uses a five-hashtag limit for posts and Reels. On YouTube, more than 60 hashtags causes all hashtags on the content to be ignored. For other platforms, follow the current platform guidance and prefer relevance over volume.

Review year-specific tags

A tag containing a year is useful for a post about that year's event, but it becomes stale afterward. Keep evergreen festival pages free of unnecessary year tags and add the current year only when it describes the content.

Use festival pages as planning templates, not copy blocks

For a festival post, choose one celebration label, then decide whether the post is mainly about a ritual, food, outfit, family moment, local event or photography. That second decision should influence the remaining tags. For example, a Pongal kolam tutorial needs different context from a Pongal recipe or Mattu Pongal celebration. This approach also works for global holidays: a Christmas market post, a family dinner and a church service are all Christmas content but have different supporting vocabulary.
